Congressman Scott DesJarlais has expressed approval of a recent decision by the Trump administration to terminate SNAP benefits for illegal migrants. The announcement, made by President Donald J. Trump and U.S. Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins, aligns with DesJarlais' long-standing concerns regarding misuse of the program.
In a statement, Rep. DesJarlais extended his gratitude: “Thank you, President Trump and Secretary Rollins, for putting the needs of American citizens first. SNAP was designed to ensure that United States citizens with food insecurity get the assistance they need. Thank you for ensuring our taxpayer dollars are not spent on criminals who cross our border illegally.”
The congressman highlighted his efforts in addressing what he describes as widespread abuse of SNAP benefits by individuals crossing the border illegally. He criticized President Biden’s administration for allegedly ignoring these issues. “Democrats, led by the Biden Administration and their high-ranking officials, were complicit in refusing to acknowledge legitimate questions into this matter,” he said.
DesJarlais detailed several instances where he sought answers from government officials under the Biden administration without success:
- In April 2022, he questioned USDA Deputy Under Secretary Stacy Dean.
- In June 2022, he queried Connecticut SNAP Program Administration Manager.
- In June 2022, he discussed migrant SNAP benefits with Just the News.
- In March 2023, he questioned USDA Secretary Tom Vilsack.
- Also in March 2023, he sent letters to USDA Secretary Vilsack and DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.
Concluding his remarks on the recent decision by Trump's team, DesJarlais stated: “I am glad to see that the entire Trump Administration is committed to ending the abuse of this much-needed program for many American citizens.”
