Sometimes, great work by City staff and contractor crews on a complicated new amenity gets started in one year, then bears fruit the next year.
The new $1 million sidewalk on the east side of Texas Avenue between Western Avenue and Gerald Street thus makes the Best of 2022 highlights list.
This 1,300-foot-long pathway officially opens soon. It connects two existing sidewalks and includes a retaining wall and major drainage improvements along Texas Avenue. Morgan Contracting began installation of drainage structures and excavation for the project in spring 2022.
The Texas Avenue project was part of more than $7.2 million in major sidewalk and greenway projects initiated or completed in 2022.

Last year, the Engineering Department replaced more 3,400 linear feet of existing sidewalk and constructed nearly 7,200 linear feet of new sidewalk throughout the City of Knoxville.
