Honoring detention staff during National Correctional Officers’ Week
Deputies are vital to the safety of Rutherford County as they maintain the security of the Adult Detention Center every day, said Sheriff Mike Fitzhugh.
Fitzhugh joined in recognizing the detention deputies during National Correctional Officers’ Week May 1-7.
“Our deputies assigned to the detention center are dedicated to the supervision of more than 600 inmates,” Fitzhugh said. “They show professionalism in their jobs every day, 24 hours a day throughout the year.”
Deputy Chief Kevin Henderson described the role of the corrections deputies as “society’s keepers.”
“The job of a corrections officer is multi-tasking,” Henderson said. “Officers provide services most don’t think of to include spiritual, mental health and lifestyle changes of the inmates along with special needs individuals. With that being said, they also have to be firm, fair and consistent in their daily duties.
Deputies assigned to detention are being honored with meals during the week from individuals, restaurants, supervisors and churches.
President Ronald Reagan proclaimed the week of May 6 National Correctional Officers’ Week in 1984 to recognize the complex duties of correctional officers whose “roles deserve our utmost respect.”
